The Island
The Garden Island of Kaua’i, as it was fondly named by Hawaiians, has the most lush and colorful tropical vegetation of the islands. Po’ipu is located at the southern tip of the island, with many activites conveniently located.

Sunset Photo

The rainfall on parts of Kaua’i is abundant; however, the average annual rainfall in Po’ipu is only 30 inches. The south shore of the island abounds in sunshine, accented by gentle trade winds, and daytime temperatures within the 70’s and 80’s year round. Winter months receive a bit more rain than summer, but in Kaua’i, it’s beautiful even when it rains!

Kaua'i Map

Within a short distance of Po’ipu Palms you will find beautiful beaches for sunning, snorkeling and boogie boarding, golf, tennis, horse back riding, wind surfing, whale watching (January through March), and plenty of dining. Shopping can be found at the Po’ipu Shopping Village less than five minutes down the road; at Spouting Horn, where local entrepreneurs set up stands and sell jewelry and gifts; or in historic Koloa Town, about 1.5 miles from Po’ipu.

Beaches within walking distance

Poipu Beach Park - Fabulous snorkeling and swimming, including a great shallow area for kids. Life Guard on duty. Five minute walk West.

Brenneke’s Beach - Popular Boogie Boarding Beach. Lots of local kids on the weekends & in summer. Five minute walk West.

Shipwreck Beach - Beautiful place to soak in the sun and or take a morning stroll. This beach runs along the front of the Hyatt hotel (which is a must-see all it’s own). Not a great swimming beach because the waves are stronger here. Five minute walk East.

Beaches close by, but within driving distance

Mahaulapu - One of our personal favorites. This beach is more secluded and the scenery is gorgeous. It is a great place to wander among the lithified sand dunes and watch the waves crash against the sea walls. Great for picture taking. The swimming and snorkeling are good on calm days. About a 7–10 minute drive from Po’ipu Palms.

Kiahuna Beach - A pretty stretch of beach in front of the Sheraton Hotel. Good swimming and snorkeling. About a 5–7 minute drive east.

Beach House Beach - Great snorkeling. It is a small stretch of sand, so it’s not as good for sunning. About a 5–7 minute drive east.

Our Favorite Restaurants in Po’ipu area

Beach House Restaurant -742-1424. Great fish/seafood, incredible view of the sunset, $20 – $35/dinner.

Roy’s in the Poipu Shopping Village - More great fish/seafood with excellent sauces and presentation, good variety of dishes, and excellent dessert! $20 – $35/dinner

Keoki’s Paradise in Poipu Shopping Village - 742-7534. Good variety of seafood and other American dishes. Good food, just not quite as “fancy” as Beach House or Roy’s. Great atmosphere. $15–$30/dinner.

Brennecke’s - 742-7588. (Across the street from Poipu Beach Park.) Steak and seafood. Usually good food. Great view. $15–$40/dinner.

The Hyatt Restaurants - 742-1234 (easy walk.) There are several restaurants in the Hyatt and we have never been disappointed with any of them. Prices range from moderate to high. While you’re at the Hyatt, stop in the bar, called The Library — and watch the video of the hurricane. (Call to find out what time it shows).

Joe’s Restaurant at the Golf Course - Jjust beyond Poipu Shopping Village. Great for breakfast!

Sightseeing

Napali Coast Tours - There are many companies offering sight-seeing trips along the Napali Coast. Choose the type of boat you prefer and then find the company offering the best times or prices for your needs. Most leave from the Port Allen area near Hanapepe — about a 30–40 minute drive.

Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park - Not to be missed! Spectacular scenery and fabulous hiking. The “Grand Canyon of the Hawaiian Islands” is one of Kauai’s best sights. Kokee State Park at the top of the canyon is lush and green and offers a wide variety of hikes for all to enjoy, from shorter strolls through the wild ginger to more adventurous day hikes. Waimea and Kokee are an easy 45 minute to one hour drive west.

Golf

Two of the most popular golf courses on Kaua’i, the Kiahuna and Poipu Bay (at the Hyatt and home of the PGA Grand Slam), are within a mile of Po’ipu Palms. Kukuiolono, the island's least expensive course at $7 per day, is about eight miles away in Kalaheo. Within a half-hour drive are two 18 hole courses at the Lagoons — Lagoons and Kiele. Puakea, a new ten-hole treasure which opened in November 1997, is located about 10 miles from Po’ipu Palms. Wailua, the County golf course, is between Lihue and Kapaa (about a 20 minute drive). The Prince and the Princeville Makai are on the North end of Kauai and great to play when it is not raining.

Tennis

The Kiahuna Tennis Club - Less than five minutes down the road, they have a nice pro shop that rents raquets, and an open-air café serving breakfast and lunch. There are 10 courts, so you can almost always get a court when you want it.

Horseback Riding

CJM Country Stables - Just a few miles from Po’ipu, they offer a variety of guided rides including a breakfast ride.
